In February of this year the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) began announcing local emphasis programs on Workplace Violence Hazards at Residential Intellectual and Developmental Disability Facilities, putting a special emphasis on tracking and citing violations in these facilities. Then in June, Secretary Perez of the Department of Labor announced that the agency was raising maximum penalties from OSHA by 78 percent, from $7,000 to $12,471.
As OSHA is focusing more on services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and significantly raising fines for workplace violations, it is more important than ever to ensure that providers of these services have a concrete workplace violence prevention program in place.
